Women’s Cougar Rugby (BYU) and Colorado were the first to book their tickets to round of 16, having finished one and two in the East division. BYU has been preparing for its opening round match against Ohio State all winter, and has put up some big numbers against local DII teams Utah State and Utah Valley and DI’s New Mexico (58-7) during the last month. Colorado will see Midwest champion Northern Illinois. Both playoff games will occur at Ohio State. Stanford went undefeated in the North division, outscoring opponents 238-57. The Cardinal ended their regular season with a 57-22 win over Chico. “We were fortunate enough to play our entire squad of 23, especially in the second half,” Stanford captain Frances Wehrwein said. “It speaks to our depth, and allowed for gaining some valuable experience for some younger players. Chico is a great team to play, especially because of their physicality in the forwards, and we are happy to come off that win heading into the end of our winter quarter, and soon into our spring break trip to Canada.” Chico finished fourth behind UC Davis in the North, and both will head to the Pacific Mountain playoffs on April 6-7 at Chico State. Both teams ended their regular seasons with wins against Oregon: Davis 55-12, Chico 62-12. Davis will face PMC East #3 seed Colorado State in the first round of PMC playoffs, while Chico will see PMC South #2 seed UC Santa Barbara. The conclusion of the PMC South league season ended with some suspense. Heading into last weekend, UCLA already clinched the top seed, but then dropped a 22-19 decision to UC San Diego, a team the Bruins had defeated 31-5 two weeks earlier. Had UC San Diego earned the bonus point in the victory, they could have edged out UC Santa Barbara on point differential. But Santa Barbara did all it had to do – they held onto a 20-all tie against Arizona State and finished with 15 points. Had the wind blown a slightly different direction, UC San Diego could be heading to playoffs instead of UCSB. As for the two other locations hosting round of 16 matches – Mobile, AL, and Princeton, NJ – those seeds will be decided when the South and Mid-Atlantic conclude their respective territorial championships on March 31-April 1.
