It’s a busy weekend for the women’s club 7s team. By Saturday evening, we’ll know who’s moving onto nationals in San Francisco, August 4-5.
The Pacific Coast determined their seeds last weekend, as Seattle defeated Berkeley in the final, and the Emerald City Mudhens took third over the Sacramento Amazons. Southern California also determined that San Diego (#1) and Belmont Shore (#2) were the best of the four competitive teams in the region. The Surfers won both the Santa Monica 7s and Sunsplash 7s last weekend to take the top seed. The South is sending an Southern Exposure to the big show. No championship was necessary as the Atlanta-area team was the only squad vying for a spot.
The NRU is hosting its championship at the Hell Gate 7s in New York City. Six teams are competing for the three bids to California. The Boston Belles and New York ended the qualifying season with 48 points, but the Belles took two tournament titles and were ranked 1. They should see each other in the final, a rematch of the Midnight 7s final that the Boston side won easily. Also in contention are 7s-only sides Falcons and Pony Express from the Northeast, and Morris and Village Lions from the NY/NJ area. Bets are on the Falcons to take the third seed to nationals.
In MARFU, six teams are competing at the territorial championship in Norfolk, Va. No surprise that NOVA is leading the standings, but it’s their second side that has surprised the field this season. NOVA 2 comes into the competition as the #3 seed. MARFU gets three spots at nationals, so if the standings hold, there could be two NOVA sides in California. The DC Furies are in second and should see NOVA in the final bout. Also competing are Philly, Maryland Exiles and Norfolk Storm.
The Midwest is holding its final tournament in a three-event qualifying series. The two teams with the highest aggregate points will take the two seeds to nationals. The Minneapolis-based Youngbloodz and Chicago North Shore have advanced to the previous two tournaments’ final, splitting the decisions. None of the other teams have been able to challenge the Eagle-infused squads, so expect to see these two in another final in Michigan. They’ll make great additions to the club 7s championship, having forfeited their seeds last year.
