Scoring three times through rolling mauls and led by strong games from Parisa Azgharzadeh, Carrie White, Christina Zier, and Margaret Lessman, the Seattle Breakers defeated crosstown rivals the Emerald City Mudhens to begin their women's DI club league campaign with a victory.
Also victorious in Competitive Region 1, which covers Washington, Oregon, California, and Arizona, were the Nor Cal Triple Threat, which downed the San Francisco Fog 42-19.
In the East in CR3, NOVA was victorious over Philadelphia 41-27.
it wasn't a total loss for Philly, as they secured a bonus point for scoring four tries.
"We're feeling positive about earning the bonus point," said captain Emily Tunny. "But obviously our defense needs improvement. We're looking forward to tightening that up before our next match in Atlanta on September 15."
Also winning was Boston, which beat Providence 33-19. Boston scored two early tries and kept Providence clear of their tryline. However, the Rhode Islanders came back stronger in the second half, and made BWRFC work for it.
"It was back-and-forth in the second half, with lots of hard hitting rugby," said Boston club president Denise Lyn Shue.
CR2 was idle in league play, but also have two 1-0 teams in Detroit and Austin. Sixteen of the 21 teams in the competition are in action next week.
