No surprises in the fifth week of the Women's Premier League, as favored team defeated opponents 181-30.
|
The biggest surprise was arguable Berkeley's 33-0 win over Keystone. The All Blues, now the only undefeated team in the WPL, scored all of its points in the second half. Scrumhalf Elaine Gardner accounted for four of those five-pointers, while Phoebe Boone and Ashley English contributed tries, and Jill Whitfield handled the extras.
Despite the loss, Keystone is still in second place at 3-2 in the Blue Conference. Beantown have closed in after their 42-15 win over visiting DC Furies, and could steal the #2 seed if they beat Keystone in the final week of play.
DC kicked off each half with a score, thanks to Emily Miller and Beth Noto, and also accounted for the final try of the day. But Beantown stars like Amy Daniels (2), Mel Denham, Katie Dowty, Sharon Wacht and Ashley Clancey were too much for DC and all scored tries. Emily Jones slotted the conversion and Kelly Seary added on a dropgoal.
The Furies will be hard pressed to end their season with a win, as they travel to Berkeley this Saturday for their league-closer.
In the Red Conference, San Diego returned to Minnesota only two weeks after playing the Amazons, who served the Surfers their first loss of the season. This trip was much more enjoyable as San Diego ran up a 59-5 victory over the host Valkyries.
Nine players crossed for tries: Jill Duggan, Audrey Johnson, Kristy Lear, Liz Henry, Kim McLaughlin, Kirstin Hartos, Hannah Bennett, Emilie Bydwell and Jenna Anderson. Hartos hit seven of nine conversions.
Despite the rebound, the Amazons still retain first place thanks to a bonus-point earned in their loss to the Surfers weeks ago. Twin Cities kept the one-point lead over San Diego intact with a 47-10 win over New York today.
The Twin Cities backs handled most of the tries, the lone exception being Stacey Bridges five-pointer. Wing Kaelene Lundstrum scored twice, while Lynelle Kugler, Rebecca Radtke and Ashley Mulford also dotted down. Desiree Markovich kicked conversions and added a penalty.
This upcoming weekend marks the final regular season match-ups. The closest game should be Beantown v Keystone, as that outcome bears the most weight. Beantown is favored in the duel; Otherwise, home teams should win easily.
