| USA 7s Pool D: Round 3 |
| Tournaments - USA Sevens Tournament | |
|
The England v Kenya match was always going to be the highlight of pool D. Heading into the third round of the USA 7s tournament, both teams sat at 2-0, with Kenya leading the standings on point differential.
From the kickoff, England tested its speed outside and almost had a lane open up on the sideline had Dan Norton’s offload not been knocked on by his support. That foray into Kenyan territory was the only significant one, while Kenya took control and retained the majority of possession. Kenya found themselves on England’s five meter, and it appeared they squandered the scoring opportunity after England turned the ball over in the breakdown, they worked the ball back to upfield. But just when England was feeling safe, Lavin Asego caught the Roses sleeping and ran 40 meters uncontested underneath the posts. He converted his try for the 7-0 lead about five minutes in. England needed a break and they got it about a minute into the second half when Oscar Ouma was yellow carded for a high tackle. Awarded in Kenya’s half, the penalty and man advantage proved useful, and Tom Mitchell found a seam to attack and score. Marcus Watson’s easy conversion tied it up 7-all. With plenty of time to break the tie, neither team could penetrate each other’s try line. With time drawing to a close, Kenya sauntered to their lineout and opted for the kick to touch when awarded another penalty to end the game. They were obviously happy to take a tie against England. Scotland and Brazil panned out as planned, with the former banking a 33-5 win. Fraser Harkness led with 12 points on two tries and a conversion, while Colin Gregor added 11 points on a try and three conversions, and Kerr Gossman and James Fleming added five pointers. Brazil got their five points from Diogo Borges on the buzzer Both teams advance to the bowl quarterfinals. Scotland will play Japan and Brazil will see Australia. England will have the pleasure of seeing the pool A winner, while Kenya will see pool A’s second place squad.
