The Mexico National 7s team will travel to Denver to appear in the Denver Sevens Rugby Tournament on July 20, 2013 at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, Colo.
The tournament, first played in 1968, is a West Rugby Football Union Super Regional qualifier for the 2013 USA Rugby National Men’s Club 7s Championship.
The Denver 7s tournament is the first tournament for Mexico’s 7s team in preparation for the North American and Caribbean Rugby Association (NACRA) 7s tournament to be held November 9-10, 2013 in Grand Cayman. Mexico has risen from seventh in NACRA to 3rd, behind only the USA and Canada.
If Mexico’s recent successes continue, they hope to represent NACRA at the Hong Kong 7s in 2014.
“Next year in November we have the Central American Games in Veracruz, Mexico, as well as the NACRA tournament a few days later, so we are looking to make sure that we keep improving in each tournament so that we can make it to the final of the Central American Games and hopefully secure a gold medal and qualify for the Pan American Games,” said Head Coach Simon Pierre.
The Pan-Am Games will be held in Toronto in 2015.
The Denver Sevens tournament attracts some of the top 7s teams in the US and provides playing opportunities for all levels of competition. Brackets include: Men’s Qualifier, Men’s Collegiate, Women’s, Men’s Social, Boys High School, Girls High School and Youth matches. Participating teams, of which there will be more than 50, are from Colorado, Arizona, California, Kansas, Louisiana, Missouri, Nebraska, New Mexico, Texas, Utah and Wyoming. In addition to Mexico’s National Sevens team, the United States Army All-Stars will participate.
This year marks the second year that Sevens rugby matches will take place inside the stadium at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. The winner of the men’s qualifier will be presented with the Michael Sneath Memorial Cup and a spot in the USA National Men’s Club 7s Championship.
