Rugby teams and coaching staffs will travel from twelve different east coast and Midwestern states, including Canadian and Caribbean teams participating this year. The 2014 Carolina Ruggerfest has become one of the largest junior and high school rugby tournaments in the United States, thanks in part to local youth rugby organizers, and major sponsor Ranger Construction of Charlotte.
The competition this year is now comprised of 40 teams that include high school men and women, as well as middle school boys teams. Averaging 27 players and reserves per team, over 1,100 up-and-coming rugby players will converge on the Charlotte region to compete for the Ruggerfest Championship Cup.
The ever-expanding Ruggerfest will share field space with the College ACC 7’s Rugby Tournament, whereby 6-8 college-level rugby teams will compete for the ACC 7’s Rugby trophy. For parents and youth players, this is an expanded opportunity for regional high school players to meet ACC college rugby coaches and players, and to further consider their future in the sport.
Once Day-1 competition winds down at the Matthews SportsPlex, Saturday evening action will shift to Butler High School, just west of Independence Boulevard at 1810 Matthews-Mint Hill Rd, Matthews, NC 28105, for the 2014 College Rugby Showcase. The Sunday rugby finale will return to the Matthews SportsPlex at Tank Town Road.
As a precursor to the Showcase Event, Butler High School in Matthews, NC will also host the finals of the ACC 7s College Rugby tournament.
Gates open to the public at 5:00 PM Saturday night. Admission is $5.
The 2012 College Rugby Showcase match drew a record attendance of 3,500 rugby fans. This on March 8th, Clemson University (SC) will face Wheeling Jesuit University (WV) in a much anticipated clash between two college rugby powerhouses will take place inside Butler High School stadium, and will feature players nominated to the USA Rugby Junior All-American squad.
