The San Francisco team going to the World Club 7s in London August 17-18 has been selected. See the New York team announcement here.
As expected, the squad is a mixture of players from SFGG, along with some USA players. Former USA 7s team captain Jone Naqica will coach the squad.
Mose Timoteo will likely captain the team. The longtime player, who first came to prominence in 1998 playing for the All American 7s team at the National All-Star Championships, and who last played for the USA in 2012, 14 years later, continues to be one of the smartest and most respected halfbacks in the game.
Brothers Neil Barrett and Danny Barrett will join up once more, having been teammates at Cal before Neil graduated. Three St. Mary’s players, the hard-charging Mike Haley, speedy Tim Maupin, and tall, multi-skilled Garrett Brewer, also are on the squad alongside power forward and club president Bruce Thomas, flyhalf Volney Rouse, and previously-capped 7s player Mile Pulu.
The USA program has contributed three players to the San Francisco squad – Mike Te’o, Jack Halalilo, and Carlin Isles.
Halalilo is a Bay Area talent who will bolster an already powerful forward group. Te’o can play virtually anywhere but will likely work as an extra scrumhalf/flyhalf. Isles, of course, is the speedster sensation everyone is worried about.
“I am going to work the game plan around the USA guys,” said Naqica. “They are kind of a perfect fit. Jack is a leader in the forwards – in the last four years 7s has become much more physical and we have a good, tough, physical team. Mike Te’o is a good playmaker. And Carlin is a finisher.”
Pulu has a reputation as a good distributor who can set up fast outside players (he was a big reason why Maka Unufe led the Pan-Am Games in tries in 2011). Naqica agrees.
“If Mile was commit defenders and offload out of contact, then we should be able to put Carlin into space,” he said. “We have a good mix of playmakers who complement our runners and finishers.”
The bulk of this San Francisco team will play at the National Club Championships August 10-11 in Pittsburgh. They will then fly home only to turn right around and fly from San Francisco to London for the August 17 event.
