Northeast Wins Women 7s NASC
Sevens - All-Stars

A torrid, four-try second half saw the Northeast women's all-stars defeated the Stars & Stripes USA developmental team 41-17 to take the 2012 Women's 7s All-Star Championships Saturday.

The Northeast shook off a wonky Friday day of pool play in which they lost two close games and finished 1-2, and started the day by thrashing the West 33-7 in the quarterfinals.

In the semis the NRU exacted revenge for a Friday loss to the Pacific Coast, beating the Grizzlies 19-12 thanks to a last-second Vanesha McGee try.

Meanwhile the Stars & Stripes, as you'd expect from a group of national team players and contenders, had a smoother road to the final, winning all three matches on Day One (including a 12-10 squeaker over the Mid-Atlantic), and wins over SoCal and Mid-Atlantic to make the championship match.

But in the final, the more experienced Northeast team pulled away late.

Danielle Miano started the scoring for the Northeast, and in fact would end up with six tries for the weekend, the most of any women's player. She scored her second to put the NRU up 12-0 minutes into the game. But Katie Johnson got one back for the Stars & Stripes. Right before halftime the teams traded tries (Jessica Peterson for Northeast, Rebekah Siebach for S&S) to make it 19-12 NRU at the break.

After that, though, it was all Northeast. Peterson and McGee both scored, and after Siebach zipped in for another for the Stars & Stripes, any hopes of a comeback were dashed as Deven Owsiany and Miranda Previte scored late for the NRU.

Peterson was a huge factor for her teams all weekend long. She kicked ten conversions, leading the tournament, and her kicking put the Northeast in a position to win.

Meanwhile the Pacific Coast needed an overtime try from Irene Gardner to beat the Mid-Atlantic for 3rd. The Midwest beat SoCal 19-7 for 5th (the Bowl), and the Shield (7th) went to the South, which beat the West 19-12.

Final Rankings and won-loss record:
1. Northeast (4-2)
2. Stars & Stripes (5-1)
3. Pacific Coast (5-1)
4. Mid-Atlantic (2-4)
5. Midwest (3-3)
6. SoCal (1-5)
7. South (3-3)
8. West (1-5)
