Central Park, New York, NY - USA 7s player Ida Bernstein, who led the Mid-Atlantic RFU to this year’s Women’s National All Star 7s title last month, made good use of her speed and athleticism to outrun a large field and win the 2010 Regis and Kelly High Heel-A-Thon.
In so doing, Bernstein won $10,000 and a brand new Volkswagen Jetta.
Held in New York City’s Central Park, and televised live Wednesday morning on ABC’s Regis and Kelly Show, the High Heel-A-Thon, requires the all-female competitors to wear heels measuring at least three inches.
Bernstein literally dove across the finish line of the 150 yard race to edge out the second place finisher. As Ida stood on the podium to receive her awards, both Philbin and Kelly Ripa inquired about the very visible scrapes resulting from her dive onto the macadam. Bernstein, who is in grad school pursuing a PhD, replied: “I won; they’re nothing.”
Bernstein appeared all-business gearing up for the race, as she was seen looking serious and stretching before the start. But she was all smiles afterward, brushing off the injuries, crediting rugby for her training, and looking delighted as she received the check and the car.
"I totalled my car last week," she told Ripa, adding that she will celebrate tonight, by "driving my new car."
