The Empire Rugby Conference Sevens Series kicked off this past weekend at SUNY Buffalo with the St. Bonaventure Bonnies taking home the Cup over the Stony Brook Seawolves in an exciting final match.
“We were thrilled with the competition at the Empire Sevens Series in Buffalo and obviously very excited to come away with the Cup,” said Clarence Picard, Head coach of the Bonnies. “After losing to Stony Brook in pool play we knew we'd have to make some changes. We shored up the scrum, focused more on defense, and sticking to the patterns.”
Even though they had lost to Stony Brook in pool play, St. Bonaventure made the right adjustments.
“In the final we had to battle a couple [of] injuries, but everyone, especially Dan Dillon, Pat Hogan and Kevin Corley, played their best rugby in the final,” said Picard. “Ryan Brennan stepped in as captain when Kevin McCorry and Greg Johnson went down. And I have to mention Jon Garbin and Jordan Farrant, who were defensive stalwarts in the cup playoffs.
“Kevin Dublin set up a great event with the support of University of Buffalo," added Picard. "The rugby was fast and exciting and improved throughout the day. We are honored to come out on top of such a competitive tournament, and look forward to more Empire Sevens action in the future.”
