Aztecs Win Tourney in SB
Sevens - Collegiate Sevens

San Diego State defeated Cal Poly to win the Santa Barbara collegiate 7s Saturday.

In a tough, competitive tournament that also features UCSB, UCLA, Santa Barbara City College, Cal State Long Beach, and University of San Diego, the Aztecs were outstanding, shutting down every opponent, culminating in the shutout in the final – 17-0.

Cal Poly Head Coach David Burnett was philosophical after his team made their third straight  tournament final, a laudable achievement on its own.

“We were playing some great rugby throughout the day so came into the final very confident,” said Burnett. “For us the final was just one of those games when the bounce of the ball and a few calls don’t go your way, but that’s sport. San Diego State played very well, their defensive pressure was probably the best we've come up against this season.”

"This weekend was a good start to our campaign," said SD State Head Coach matt Hawkins. "We definitely built steadily through the day and were tested throughout. But when the final arrived the guys played their best rugby of the day and it showed with Cal Poly finishing scoreless."

Mike Shea led as usual, while Frank Ramon stepped up for the Aztecs and "has become another great leader on our team," said Hawkins. The rest of the team, added the coach, "were level-headed throughout the day and played some great rugby. Our subs provided great impact and helped lift the team when we needed it."

The Aztecs still have some room for improvement, said Hawkins.

"The beauty about the sport and I think we're all excited to see what we can put together in the next few weeks before the California Championship," he added.
