The Stony Brook University Seawolves warmed up for USA Rugby Collegiate 7s Championships by winning the New York 7s collegiate bracket at Randall’s Island this weekend.
Throughout the day Stony Brook was met with many challenges. In pool play, the Seawolves played against Bishop University (Canada), Central Conneticut II and Rutgers University.
In the last game of pool play the Seawolves found themselves scoreless and trailing Rutgers at halftime. But in the second half they scored five tries to win 31-19. From then on the Seawolves never trialed a game again and played through two more Canadian teams to win the Collegiate premier bracket. “I'm proud of our guys,” said Stony Brook Coach Daniel Yarusso. “They all played well and aren't making selections for nationals easy for me.” Unfortunately the Seawolves suffered the tragic and sudden loss of a close friend of the team, Susie Facini. Facini, 19, died suddenly Thanksgiving Night while watching TV with her mother. She was a regular at many Stony Brook rugby games, and remembered fondly by her classmates and the team as always having a smile on her face as she showed endless support to her friends on the team. The Seawolves went into this weekend’s tournament heavy-hearted and dedicated their trophy to Susie Facini.
