Old Mission Beach Athletic Club takes a lot of pride in the clubs enviable 7s record, so not even qualifying for the national championships last year hit them hard. This year, OMBAC is back, as they defeated Belmont Shore II 19-7 in the final of the Belmont Shore 7s Saturday (Belmont Shore I had already qualified). “We are very pleased to be back,” said OMBAC Head Coach Craig Hartley. “We are off to San Francisco and it feels great.” OMBAC did the job despite missing some key personnel, including prop Tai Tuisamoa, back Jason Raven, and the experienced Mike Shea. “We had some injuries and guys not available, and at that point you really hope the young guys step up, and they did,” said Hartley. “We needed them and did the job today.” Leading the way were youngsters Zach Shapiro and Trevor Adams, and Hartley said it was fitting they played well when it mattered. “Belmont Shore has a very solid program and even their 2nd team plays against their 1sts in training, so they are very good,” he said. “We are still a young program, and we needed to perform well. We needed a team effort with guys sticking to the pattern. That’s what they did and as a coach it was very gratifying.”
