Canada Men's 15s National Head Coach Kieran Crowley has named his starting lineup for Canada’s Pacific Nations Cup (PNC) debut against USA on Saturday at Ellerslie Rugby Park in Edmonton, Alb.
The match will be broadcast live on www.rugbycanada.ca at 2pm MT (4PM Eastern, 1PM Pacific).
Having not played together since the 2012 November tour – where Kieran Crowley’s men defeated Russia and lost to Samoa and the New Zealand Maori – Canada will look for a strong start against the Mike Tolkin’s side from USA.
Dating back to 1977, Canada and the USA have met 48 times at the Senior Men’s level, with Canada boasting 35 wins to their advantage. Last season Canada defeated USA 28-25 in Kingston on June 9 after a final try by their captain, Aaron Carpenter. Canada’s Americas Rugby Championship Side – which featured nine members of this weekend’s 23-man roster – also defeated USA 23-3 in the second game of the four-team tournament at the Canadian Rugby Centre of Excellence in Langford, BC last October.
Saturday’s game will be the first of three versus the Americans this summer, as the two sides will compete in an aggregate home-and-home Rugby World Cup Qualifying series in August. The first leg will be at Blackbaud Stadium in Charleston, SC Augusut 16. Toronto’s BMO stadium will play host to the series finale on August 24, 2013.
Although Canada holds a historical head-to-head advantage, the Americans, led by captain by Todd Clever, will be a difficult challenge in the PNC opener.
Captaining the Canadian squad from No. 8 will be the 47-cap veteran Carpenter, who recently signed a pro contract with the Cornish Pirates of the RFU Championship.
Manning the front row will be Saskatchewan’s Hubert Buydens, Ontario’s Ray Barkwill and British Columbia’s Jason Marshall. Overseas professionals Brett Beukeboom and Tyler Hotson – of Plymoth Albion and London Welsh respectively – will start in the second row. Alongside captain Carpenter, John Moonlight and Tyler Ardron will round out the back row for Canada.
Victoria native Sean White, who has 17 caps for Canada, slots in at scrumhalf, while West Vancouver’s Harry Jones gets his second start in the flyhalf position. Outside Jones, a solid duo of Newfoundland’s Pat Parfrey and Alberta’s Nick Blevins will start in the midfield.
Canada’s back-three is comprised of Taylor Paris of the Glasgow Warriors and Newfoundland’s Ciaran Hearn on the wings with Connor Braid of the Doncaster Knights in at fullback.
After four days of training at the Canadian Rugby Centre of Excellence and Saint Michaels University School on Vancouver Island, BC, Canada’s Senior Men’s Team is travelling to Edmonton on Wednesday.
