Canadian U20s Begin Camp
Canada - Men

Ahead of the 2011 Junior World Trophy, Canada's men's U20 team will be assembling for the single longest pre-competition training camp, one that will span eighteen days before final selections and then departing for the Republic of Georgia.

Thirty-two players will be going to Shawnigan Lake School on Vancouver Island, where first year coach Mike Shelley will put the group through an intensive preparation.  The camp will include a pair of trial matches, before the list is slimmed to the twenty-six man final squad.

Shelley selected the current recruits from a previous camp held in March at Shawnigan Lake. The decision to go with one long training camp prior to the four matches of the JWT is based on Shelley's desire to maximize the players' time together, while also keeping an eye on the budget for the team.

This training concept will allow for far more sessions, less expensive travel and overall huge increase in team continuity heading straight into the tournament.

"The idea is increase the contact time of the players and the coach in a competitive environment," said Shelley. "First steps will be to establish team attitude and our playing style."

Canada takes on the host Georgians to open the tournament on May 24th after departing Vancouver on May 18th. The next match is four days later as Japan will play Canada on Saturday, May 28th. The first two games of the tournament will be streamed live on the International Rugby Board website.

Canada wraps the round robin portion of the event with a match against Zimbabwe for a second consecutive  year. Based on results, Canada will play one final game on June 5th to wrap the tournament.
