James Pritchard's late penalty gave Canada a 23-20 win over Portugal Saturday, allowing Canada to finish their November tour of Europe 3-1. The 14th-ranked Canadian team defeated Belgium (#25), Spain (#23) and now Portugal (#21) while losing a close one to Georgia (#16). Canada took an early 12-0 lead on tries from Sean White and Pritchard, one of which Pritchard converted. But Portugal came back, scoring through Antonio Aquilar and Goncalo Foro, with Joe Gardner hitting both conversions for the 14-12 lead. In a tense second half, a Pritchard penalty nudged his side ahead 15-14 before Gardner put the Wolves back ahead 15-17. But Pritchard went over for his second to make it 20-17. Gardner's second penalty knotted the game 20-20. Pritchard won the match with less than five minutes remaining, hitting his third penalty and 18th point to make it 23-20. |
