Despite there being few DI ranked teams in action so far this preseason, there’s a considerable amount of movement in our Top 25. Partially to blame are mistakes we made in the fall. For instance, Maryland flew almost completely under our radar, but posted wins over Buffalo (who have already claimed a spot in the Sweet 16), Virginia and very tough DII squads Salisbury and Towson.

Also, some of the teams in action are teams we really liked in the fall but were inactive, like UC Santa Barbara. UCSB is as close to a full-time varsity squad as there is in DI, sans the actual varsity squad, Davenport. The Gauchos overall record is not great at 4-3, but they played as tough a preseason schedule as anyone and have won their first two league games with ease.

Two other teams we really liked were Chico State and Sacramento State. Outside of the Midwest-East, NorCal might be the most competitive league in America, as Stanford, Chico and Sac. State posted preseason wins over CPL UC Davis. They all also lost heavily to both St. Mary’s and Cal, but who wouldn’t? The cause for Sac. State’s meteoric jump to #16 is the Bees posting the best scores against the triumvirate's common preseason opponents.

Knocking loudly on the door are three teams from the Lone Star State: Texas, Sam Houston and Texas State. They’re currently gridlocked in a three-way tie for tops in that league, which should be broken this weekend, as Texas hosts Sam Houston. Also lining up for a ranking is Stanford. If the Cardinal can bag a home win over Sac. State Saturday, their spot in the Top 25 will be cemented.
