Men's DI-AA Top 25, Nov. 19, 2012 - P
Rankings - Men DI College

15s play in the Midwest and Northeast is pretty much done until spring, with the last of fall conference play wrapping up on the weekend, so this will be the final DI-AA Ranking of 2012.

The league tables have dictated some of our movement, like in the Empire Rugby Conference. Stony Brook falls out, but the three teams who finished higher than the Seawolves stay in the Top 25, with St. Bonaventure moving ahead of Brockport and Buffalo after clinching a playoff spot.

Tennessee played its first three 15s matches of the school year over the past three weeks, winning a close match against Virginia Tech and more decidedly over Furman and Sherman. That’s a better showing for the Vols than last year’s fall 15s campaign.

Central Florida continued to have a great autumn with a couple of more wins, including one over Florida, en route to the Florida Cup Championship. The Golden Knights and Seminoles of Florida State figure to duke it out for South Independent supremacy again this spring. The ‘Noles swept ACRL competition on their recent tour.

Oregon State also kicked into gear, beating former conference foe Washington 56-0 on the weekend. The Beavers seem as poised as ever to elevate their game in the PAC this spring.

We contemplated dropping Clemson after the Tigers’ loss at home to a touring Florida State, but no other team has raised its hand to take the spot.

We had two match-ups between ranked opponents on the weekend. In one, Stony Brook beat St. Bonaventure 35-33, and in the other, LSU took down Arkansas 46-17.

For its win, LSU jumps ahead of idle Oregon State, Arizona State and Arizona. For its loss, Arkansas drops from the list. Stony Brook was already ranked above St. Bonaventure, and that remains the case. Both teams slide a little bit, as we add Buffalo to the Top 25.

Lindenwood continues to crush everyone in the Heart of America, hanging 118 points on Iowa State. The Lions are now winning their league games by an average of 90 points a game, and that total could increase as they have some pretty weak teams left on their schedule in Kansas and Oklahoma State. For their dominance, we move the Lions ahead of UCLA.

Making their debut in the rankings this week, along with Buffalo, are the Pittsburgh Panthers. They’re 5-0 in their first season in DI and have nearly shored up a Keystone Conference championship.

Dropping out, along with Arkansas, is Florida. The Gators are off to an uncharacteristically poor start this fall, with a loss to North Florida Saturday knocking them to 1-2.

There's a ton of movement this time around, with five teams losing on the weekend. Most of the craziness happened in Florida, where Florida State lost to Spring Hill College and narrowly beat South Alabama, and Central Florida beat Florida, by 40!

The Seminoles, who are not playing in the Florida Cup this fall, mixed their A and B sides for the double-header. So, technically, FSU's A-Side hasn't played this fall. But Spring Hill College is an NSCRO team. Granted, Spring Hill is going the way of Wheeling Jesuit by putting resources into their men's and women's programs and hiring a coach away from USA Rugby, but Mollie McCarthy was announced as the head coach just this month, so she's hardly had the time to bring in enough recruits to justify Florida State losing to Spring Hill, mixed side or not.

The Gators' excuses are a hasty transition from 7s and turnover. With seven players earning their first-ever A-side action for Florida on the weekend, the Gators rebounded from the Saturday loss to UCF by beating the tar out of Florida Atlantic. We do drop Florida and Florida State really far for their performances, but we don't knock them out. Last fall, we saw warm weather teams like Tennessee and LSU lose early preseason games to teams they shouldn't have and bounce back for really good spring campaigns.

Another big loss was Maryland getting beaten handily by Salisbury. If the Sharks were DI-AA, they'd be ranked here. So we won't completely crush the Terps, but they're on notice.

Brown lost to Dartmouth and Arkansas to Arkansas State, but hey, it's Dartmouth and Arkansas State. We should find out more about the Razorbacks after they play LSU in Baton Rouge this coming weekend.

You'll also notice Arizona, Arizona State and Oregon State slid. They will have plenty of time to overcome their idleness when their seasons get going. Too many teams are putting up impressive results to maintain a glass floor created in the preseason.

Some of the warm weather teams are starting to play a little 15s, with LSU and Central Florida getting going.

LSU is surely not playing its full A-side in all its games, but they are playing, and the Tigers' results have to be taken into account. They tied Tulane and lost to the New Orleans men's club, so nothing too harmful, but the Tigers are bumped a couple of spots.

Central Florida is 1-0 in Florida Cup play after one week, and the Golden Knights won convincingly, so they move up a bit.

Lindenwood rebounded from a one-score loss to Davenport to trounce its toughest conference competitor in Truman State. Coupled with Navy's loss to Air Force, we now have reason to push the Lions past the Midshipmen.

Bowling Green keeps crushing the MAC Schools Conference, so we are rewarding them. And as the Falcons climb, so does Northern Illinois, who is beating everyone in the MAC Schools except Bowling Green.

Santa Barbara CC is out of the Top 25 due to inactivity, but it'll have plenty of opportunity to get back when play in SoCal starts.

There's not much movement this week, as the majority of our Top 25 was either idle or playing 7s on the weekend. Two of our ranked teams which saw 15s action lost: Lindenwood and Stony Brook.

The Lions lost to Davenport by four at a neutral site. The game featured open subs and both coaches tried to downplay its result, but a loss is a loss. And a four-point loss to Davenport is nothing to punish Lindenwood for, so they stand pat at No. 6.

Stony Brook, however, lost to now 3-2 Buffalo. The Seawolves suffered a rash of injuries against Army the week before and were missing eight starters against the Bulls. But most of those dings will equate to short-term hiatuses, so Stony Brook slides down a few spots but is on notice to move further with another loss.
