The Southern Conference regular season has ended, and the field is set for the playoffs. Appalachian State received the top overall seed by winning the Mountain Division and recording a bonus point in each win.
UNC-Wilmington claims the No. 2 seed by winning the Coastal Division and having a better strength of schedule than the Piedmont Division champion and No. 3 Elon. Coastal Carolina narrowly edged out Furman University for the wildcard spot. Both teams finished 3-1, but Coastal had a stronger strength of schedule.
Schedule Saturday 4/6
#1 Appalachian State vs. #4 Coastal Carolina - Charlotte
#2 UNC-Wilmington vs. #3 Elon University - Wilmington
The winners meet at John Roberts Field at Furman University to determine the Southern Rugby Conference Champion and the final automatic bid to the DII National playoffs.
These teams share some common opponents, and UNCW played Coastal very early in the season. The Seahawks beat Coastal 11-0.
Appalachian and Coastal both played at Lander University. Appalachian won 71-0 and Coastal won 51-3, indicating Appalachian might have the upper hand in that semifinal.
Appalachian and Elon both played Western Carolina at their home fields. App beat them 101-0. Elon beat them 54-5. UNCW beat UNC-Charlotte 44-14 while Elon lost to them 10-7, but UNCC had to forfeit to Elon for using illegal players, so it's tough to glean much from those match-ups.
