Sierra College won the Pacific Coast championship Sunday, beating Northern California rival Santa Rosa JC 29-7 in the final. Santa Rosa, which had played an extremely physical overtime game with Utah Valley the day before in one semifinal, swapped 7 starters.

Utah Valley won the third-place game 57-18 over Idaho State, despite playing without the services of flyhalf Lopeti Ofa.

“We were able to spread them out. I think our fitness really helped us, especially later in the game,” said Utah Valley coach Clint Wilson. “We still started with 19 guys, so we only had four subs, but it was good. Our guys picked it up and were able to close the deal today.”

The win will send UVU to the Sweet 16 as the Pacific Coast third seed, where they’ll have a rematch with Santa Rosa JC.

“We’re really looking forward to getting another shot at those guys,” Wilson said.

It’s the former United U19 coach’s first season at the helm of UVU, and he’s steered them to the National playoffs.

“I’ve always seen them when I coached United and thought the team should be really good, and these guys have just really come together,” said Wilson. “I’m proud of them. We’re really happy about it.”

As Pacific Coast champs, Sierra draws Southern California champion Cal State Long Beach in the Round of 16. Both that match and the UVU vs. Santa Rosa game are April 28 in Palo Alto, Calif.
