The University of Central Florida (UCF) Rugby team is enjoying being a national champion and hoping to repeat its title.
“We have been training for weeks,” said Coach Jason Granich. “I am trying to show the rugby community we are not a fluke. It is all part of the big picture. To be successful takes a lot of hard work. We have the talent and we are putting in a lot of hard work. I have set goals for the team. We are Cinderella story but we are building a program.”
USF has worked hard on recruiting and won the recent SIRC 7s Championship. During the fall season, UCF scored more than 80 points in some games in the first two weeks of the fall season. UCF defeated Miami 87-0 and proving too strong in a hard hitting match against FIU, cruising by them 81-22. The match against FIU was the first home match of the season. The game was unusual in that it took place on Friday.
UCF has been doing very well in recent games. The Golden Knights defeated Miami 119-3, a scoreline that, Granich said, was merely the result of UCF sticking to their game plan.
The University of Florida Rugby Club is also doing well. The Gators won the Florida Sunshine State Games in sevens. The Gators have participated in a number of tournaments and games.
“We are trying to get the guys fit. We do a lot of running. It takes a lot of preparation to do well in rugby and right now we are getting ready for a conference sevens tournament in November in Tennessee. We have a lot of interest. Our team has about 50 members,” said Coach Ken Simmons.
The Florida State University Rugby Club is in a rebuilding year. The program includes about 70 athletes and operates three teams. The program tries to find opponents that can offer three games. “Last year we graduated established players and we now have a new group of kids. We have to find an identity. I think we will have a good year. We have a lot of potential. We are working on developing and coming together,” said Coach Kirk Swanner.
