The University of California beat the University of British Columbia Saturday in the first leg of the annual two-match series between the two teams.
The Bears lead the series by ten points after winning 28-18 at Witter Rugby Field in Berkeley.
Cal took the early lead on a try from Danny Barrett, converted by Jake Anderson. Russell Webb added a drop goal and Anderson a penalty to make it 13-0 before UBC's Carson White slotted a 45-meter penalty kick to make it 13-3 early in the second half.
The Bears replied with a try from Paul Bosco and then in quick succession Seamus Kelly and Anthony Lombardo touched down to give the hosts a commanding 28-3 lead. The Thunderbirds kept at it, though. Brock Staller hit a penalty and then converted Ross Weymark's try to make it 28-13. Then Staller scored a try of his own to put his side within ten points with two minutes remaining. But UBC didn't get any closer. Cal visits UBC on March 24 for the return leg.
