Abelein’s try came after Stony Brook center Shane Wend made a big tackle near Stony Brook’s 22, dislodging the ball from a Kings Point player’s grasp. Abelein scooped it up to start the counter attack. He passed the ball, and it went through a few more sets of hands before coming back to the flyhalf, who finished off the score. “He is one of the team leaders as a sophomore, and as he goes on, I can see this kid playing some high level rugby,” said Stony Brook coach Jerry Mirro of Abelein. “He knows the game. He’s got all the skills at flyhalf.” |

Stony Brook flyhalf PJ Abelein leads the Empire Conference in points after the opening week of play. He accounted for 21 points in the Seawolves’ 51-14 win over the Merchant Marines Academy of Kings Point Saturday, slotting two penalties, five conversions and running in a try.
