Sacramento State and Santa Clara continue to win in Northern California, separating the conference title contenders from the outsiders.
Sac State completed the season sweep of Stanford Saturday, beating the Cardinal 41-24. Sac State jumped out to a 24-5 first-half advantage, but outscored Stanford by just two in the second half.
Jeff Gillingham dotted down two tries for the Hornets in the win.
Santa Clara avenged its only loss of the season so far, beating Chico 44-20. The Broncos lost to Chico by one point earlier this season.
Inside center Nick Johnson and hooker Ryan Falvey scored two tries a piece.
“We focused on playing solid defense and tackling, and we’re happy with our effort,” said Falvey. “We’re looking forward to a great match with Sac State in a couple of weeks.”
When Sacramento State and Santa Clara clash April 7, it will decide the Northern California title. The winner will be squarely on the bubble for an at-large bid to the Sweet 16, and the loser will likely be on the outside looking in during the postseason. In their first meeting, Santa Clara won 37-26.
