The Bowling Green rugby family is mourning the loss of three friends, Christina Goyett, 19, Rebekah Blakkolb, 20, and Sarah Hammond, 21, who were killed in an automobile accident Friday March, 2nd. The three girls were sisters in the Alpha Xi Delta sorority at Bowling Green, which has a close relationship with the rugby team. 11 members of Alpha Xi Delta were caravanning early Friday morning to the Detroit airport to fly to the Dominican Republic for spring break, when a car traveling on the wrong side of the road, being pursued by police, dodged one car of sorority sisters and collided with another. Two more students are in critical condition in a Toledo hospital. Goyett, a sophomore, was the girlfriend of BGSU center Trent Szente. Szente received news of the tragedy just as he was boarding the Falcons’ flight to New York en route to the team’s England tour. Szente stayed home to mourn the loss of his girlfriend, whose funeral services took place Wednesday in Michigan. The Alpha Xi Delta sorority had a close bond with the BGSU rugby team. “Rugby is a brotherhood. Well these girls were a sisterhood,” said one BGSU rugby parent. “They were at all the games. They were really good friends.” |
