Fourth-ranked UC Santa Barbara notched 11 tries to cruise past USC 71-3 in a windy but otherwise beautiful Saturday in Los Angeles. “We are very proud of our defensive effort” said Gauchos coach Kevin Battle. “A lot of things went well for us today, but the defensive stance is what we are most happy with."

The center pairing of Ryan O’leary and Laurie McGowan accounted for four of five tries in the first half to jumpstart the Gauchos to a 33-3 lead at intermission. The Gauchos scored six more tries in the second half, three by reserve flyhalf Marc Leabeater.

The Gauchos improved to 4-0 and are set to host 19th-ranked University of San Diego next weekend in what proves to be a pivotal match in Southern California DI conference play. UCSB defeated USD 36-8 in their last meeting, and if they hold serve at home, will have a chokehold on the conference title.
