Big OPSB Effort Sees Them past Olympic Club
Clubs - Men's DI Clubs

Old Puget Sound Beach Seattle moved to 2-1 in their hybrid NorCal league season with an impressive 42-10 defeat of Olympic Club in Seattle Saturday.

Olympic Club drops to 1-4.

Billed as a clash between the O-Club forwards and the OPSB beacks, the game ended up being won thanks to the Seattle-based front eight.

"Over the duration of the game our forwards had the measure of them," said OPSB Head Coach Justin Fitzpatrick. "They created a solid foundation around which we could build our game. It was pleasing to see such a strong performance, especially in the lineout."

The scrum wasn't too bad, either. Despite Olympic Club having two Eagle props in Will Johnson and Mike MacDonald, Beach held their own. Captain Matt Trouville said the team worked hard to prepare for the challenge come pack-down time, and even stole one against the head.

With a decent platform available in the set piece, OPSB could let their backs run. Mike Palefau scored a couple, including one from halfway, and Miles Craigwell, Emosi Vucago  and especially Nic Hawkins (who had three) also got in on the act.

The try of the day could well have been prop Oliver Kilifi lumbering 25 meters to paydirt.

"We put a lot of pressure on ourselves to handle the scrum, and we knew the game would be physical, which it was," said Trouville. "We set the goal for ourselves to man up and we didn't let up at all. I think the forward pack as a whole did a great job. And in the backs Miles Craigwell played really physical and was dominant on defense."

With the victory OPSB now is in excellent position to shoot for the #2 playoff spot out of the Pacific Coast. They still have some games to win, but lead their two-game Olympic Club series by 32 points.

"We know we have a strange season, but whether we're playing in DI or the Elite Cup or in Canada, we look on it as win or go home," said Trouville. "We've got our new coach now settling in and we feel we're headed in the right direction."

Fitzpatrick, meanwhile, pointed to a club-wide successful Saturday.

"We fielded three sides at home and won all three games, scoring more than 100 points and giving up about 30, so it was a good day."

Meanwhile, elsewhere in NorCal SFGG won big over the Sacramento Lions to stay 1st. The East Palo Alto Bulldogs, then, needed to just beat winless East Palo Alto to move past Sacramento to 2nd. They did, but just barely, winning a tough rivalry match 15-14.

So with those results, here are the preliminary, unofficial NorCal standings.

(OPSB only plays six games, while everyone else plays 10, 11 or 12, so OPSB could finish 2nd if they go 4-2).
