Three Stay Unbeaten in New England
Clubs - Men's DI Clubs

And then there were three. Four teams went into this weekend in New England’s DI league unbeaten, and now three emerge 2-0.

Mystic is 2-0Boston slammed Middlesex 64-10, led by another excellent performance by their back rowers John Quill and Liam Murphy. Quill is fast becoming a noticed commodity as he continues to cause other teams all sorts of problems at the breakdown.

“There’s been a lot of excitement in coming into DI,” said Middlesex Head Coach Josh Smith before the game. “We’re so young, though. We still have a lot of work to do dealing with young mistakes. We know we’ll be playing the best club our guys have ever seen.

"Boston Coach Mike Diamantopoulos acknowledged the contributions of his back row, but added: "honestly all the boys played well and I got to play all 22 which was great. I guess we were fit, fast, and could play rugby."

John Kokinda has been playing well for Middlesex as have some others, but this was an education for them.

Meanwhile the Boston Irish Wolfhounds won again, beating South Shore 68-8.

“I thought we were very good at the breakdown, and played reasonably well, but it is difficult to get a gauge from these first games,” said BIW Head Coach Fergal Hehir.

No. 8 Sean White led the charge in the forwards while Pat Delaney played well at fullback. But Hehir is concerned how his team will maintain their defense pattern on the fast artificial surface of Middlesex’s home ground next week.

Mystic River is also 2-0 after beating Amoskeag 48-10. Assistant coach Nick Murphy said the team could have done better – making basic errors and not quite getting their defense around the breakdown straightened out.

“But we’re happy to get a win and a bonus point. We just know we have a lot to work on – a lot,” Murphy explained.

And Hartford got one in the win column with a 36-22 defeat of New Haven. Tony Panetti scored two tries and Sean McGarrity kicked four conversions and a penalty for 11 points.
