The Austin Blacks pulled off one of the more dramatic wins in a dramatic day in the DI club Round of 16, edging OMBAC in Southern California 22-20. OMBAC led early thanks to a penalty in the first minute by Zach Pangelinan, and a try in the 24th minute from evergreen Jason Raven, converted by Pangelinan. That made it 10-0 for the San Diego club. But Austin came back. No. 8 Will Martin scored a try leading into halftime and just past halftime to tie the scores.
Tane Jericevich converted the second try to make it 12-10 Austin.
Center Levi Kereti touched down at 59 minutes and, with Jericevich’s conversion, Austin led 19-10.
OMBAC would not be bowed, and kept playing. Pangelinan hit a penalty to make it 19-13. Jericevich replied with one of his own.
Then Raven scored just as time ran out. He quickly slotted the conversion himself, but OMBAC didn’t have enough time to score one more. Austin held on 22-20. Austin takes on Glendale Sunday in the quarterfinals. Austin Blacks 22 Tries: Martin 2, Kereti Convs: Jericevich 2 Pens: Jericevich OMBAC 20 Tries: Raven 2 Convs: Pangelinan, Raven Pens: Pengelinan 2
