Two very close games punctuated the second bracket in the men’s DI club playoffs, as Metropolis edged PAC 33-26, and Mystic River squeaked by the Atlanta Renegades 17-16.
A young Mystic River team did just enough to get by the Atlanta Renegades and make the quarterfinals of the Men’s DI club playoffs. A 72nd-minute try from wing Nathan Fox secured the victory for the Boston club. Atlanta led early. Rod Ceasar scored a try which was converted by player-coach Garry Sullivan. Five minutes later Sullivan added a penalty kick to make it 10-0. But Mystic worked their way back in a game where neither team gave up much in the way of scoring opportunities. Mystic flyhalf Paul Penman hit penalties at 20, 35, 41, and 50 minutes to put his side up 12-10 with third minutes to go. The Renegades got into the Mystic end a couple of times after that, and Sullivan hit two penalties to take a 16-12 lead with ten minutes to go.
That’s when Fox scored to give Mystic the 17-16 win. Mystic River 17 Tries: Fox Pens: Penman 4 Atlanta Renegades 16 Tries: Ceasar Convs: Sullivan Pens: Sullivan 3 Meanwhile it was a back-and-forth match between Midwest #2 Metropolis and the top team from the Mid-Atlantic, Potomac Athletic Club.
The game started as most have done this Saturday, with the teams testing each other, and defensies holding steady. The two teams traded penalty goals in the early going, but it wasn’t until the 25th minute that a try was scored.
Metropolis wing Sean Kelly touched down to give the Minneapolis side an 8-3 lead. Ten minutes later, PAC replied. A penalty put Metropolis ahead 11-8 at halftime. The second half was more of the same. A Steven Shapland try, converted by David Burt, put PAC up 11-15. Two minutes later Louis Joubert scored to make it 16-15. In the closing minutes there was a frenzy of scoring as the teams worked to be one left on top at the end of the game. With time winding down PAC got a penalty from Burt to put them up 28-26. Time for one more surge for Metropolis, and from there fullback Jesse Roberts scored the winning try. Joubert’s conversion just made sure his side led by more than three. 33-28 Metropolis advances to face Mystic.
