The top four are now decided in the Competitive Region 2 (the West) as Glendale, Kansas City Blues, and Dallas were all winners Saturday.
The KC Blues defeated the visiting Austin Huns 23-18. Full report here. Meanwhile top-seeded Glendale hosted HARC, and won 64-17.
Glendale thundered into the first 20 minutes and took control early. They led 45-5 at halftime and while HARC got a couple of tries in the early going during the second half, the Raptors finished strong.
Glendale did not start Nic Johnson (concussion), James Paterson or Daryl Furlong (both injured), but won regardless. Wings DeWon Reed and Max Statler both scored two tries, while center Tyler Siegel notched 19 points from a try and seven conversions.
The other top seed in CR2, the Austin Blacks, were notified in advance that Boulder would forfeit.
Dallas, then, was the only Texas team to host on this weekend and they won 43-10 over the Denver Highlanders. In a game played in 90-degree heat and with high humidity, the locals handled the conditions slightly better than the visitors.
Dallas also worked the wind to more success, kicking to the corners in the second half and chasing with plenty of enthusiasm.
Dallas led 19-3 early, but gave up a relatively soft try near the end of the first half to have the teams change ends 19-10. But with the wind, and despite dealing with some pressure in the scrums, Dallas put the game away in the second half. Wing Paul Boyd scored three tries and kicked four conversions, while flanker Danny Torres was ferocious.
“Awesome game today,” enthused fullback Kelly Kolberg. “We really played as a team.”
So with that, the Blues move on to play the East Palo Alto Bulldogs in the National Round of 16 bracket in Chula Vista. Dallas takes on Belmont Shore.
In the other bracket, Glendale meets Santa Monica, and Austin plays OMBAC.
