Atlanta 7s Day One Wrap
Canada, New Zealand, and Russia emerged from a chilly Day One at the Atlanta 7s Women’s World Series stop with 3-0 records to top their respective pools.
Canada was virtually unstoppable, shutting out the USA and Chine before edging a tough Australia team 12-7 thanks to Mandy Marchak’s second-half try.
Russia blasted Japan 29-0 in their opener before beating Brazil 42-5 and struggling to offload Spain 19-14. The two teams were tied as time was up when Anastasia Mukhariamova scored the game-winner. Japan shocked Spain to finish 2-1.
It was a similar story for New Zealand, as they beat the Netherlands and Ireland by comfortable margins, but had to battle England 14-5, with the game in doubt until Gayle Broughton’s late try.

It was just enough to ensure the Eagles made the top eight, as the big victory put them at -7 in points difference, behind Spain but ahead of Ireland among 3rd-place teams. Two third-place teams join all of the 1sts and 2nds in the Cup Quarterfinals on Sunday.
