Eagles Trail 10-7 at the Half |

The first half of the Eagles rematch against Canada Saturday in Glendale, Colo. was reminiscent of the bulk of the game in Toronto a week earlier -- the Americans got the better of possession and phase play, but some critical errors led to a Canadian advantage.
Canada scored first when American hooker Chris Biller made a line break and John van der Giessen bobbled the ball at the back of the ensuing ruck. Canada’s DTH van der Merwe scooped up the loose ball and raced untouched for a centered try.
Canada then stretched their lead to 10 with a penalty. Eagle fly half Nese Malifa missed his two first-half shots at goal, both from near the vertical five-meter line.
Canada was shown two yellow cards for ruck infringements in the first 40 minutes, but not until the very end of the second power play did the Eagles finally capitalize and score, when a short-range grubber from Nese Malifa was dove on in the try zone by Blaine Scully. Malifa hit the difficult conversion, pulling the Eagles to within three.
Directly after the restart Canada went back on the front foot, drawing a penalty, but the try for posts was unsuccessful, leaving them up 10-7, as they’d end the half.

Super League Losing Another |

Exclusive News

The Chicago Lions have expressed their intent to exit the Super League due to a change in the Midwest's eligibility rules. The Midwest now prohibits any player who started two or more, or played in three or more, Super League games the previous spring from being eligible to play in DI, DII or DIII competition the following fall. Per the new rule, the Lions have 27 players who would be ineligible for their DI side if the club fielded a RSL team. The Lions intend to enter their second side in DII. The Super League has asked for more time to negotiate a solution through USA Rugby, and the Lions have set a deadline of Aug. 20, with their first DI match scheduled for Aug. 27. If the Lions drop from the Super League, and the rumors of the Dallas Harlequins leaving the RSL prove to be true, the league would shrink to nine teams.

USA End Nations Cup on Win |
|
National Teams -
USA Women
|
|
The USA ended its Women's Nations Cup campaign with a 29-9 win over South Africa, ending the tournament 1-3 in third place.
South Africa took an early lead when it slotted two of its three penalties to go up 6-0. Fullback Pam Kosanke answered in turn (6-3) before wing Vanesha McGee motored into the try zone for the first five-pointer of the day. Kosanke's conversion gave the Americans a 10-6 lead after the first quarter, and there the score stood until half.
Lock Laura Miller dotted down her first-ever international try (15-6) to kick off the second half. The Springboks kept it close with their final penalty of the day (15-9), but two more tries from inside center Sam Pankey and McGee, along with two Kosanke conversions, put 20 points between the Americans and RSA.
The win was a retributive one. South Africa won the teams' last match on the last play of the game.
Stay tuned for player and coach feedback.
