St. Thomas, Woodlands Win Texas Titles
School Age - Boys

The Woodlands scored an unconverted try as time expired to put a exclamation mark on the hardest hitting and most tightly contested game of the of the Texas High School Rugby Championships in its 8-0 win over previously undefeated Plano.  The win earned The Woodlands, which slotted its penalty kick in the opening minutes,  the winners cup in the High School-Club Conference.

In the High School Conference, St. Thomas of Houston defended its title, rolling to a convincing 47-7 win over Austin Westlake, a scoreline that does not do justice to the intensity of the match which Westlake actually led early on.  The Eagles have now claimed three of the last four state championships.

Stony Point rallied for a 22-11 come-from-behind win in the Plate Championship over first-year program Lake Travis in a battle of Austin-area teams.

Alliance of North Texas defeated the El Paso Spartans for third place in the Club Conference; Jesuit Dallas claimed third in the School Conference with its win over El Paso Cathedral, and Kingwood (Houston) overtook Allen (Dallas area) late in the match to take third in the Plate Division.

In action on Saturday, Plano defeated El Paso Spartans as The Woodlands dispatched Alliance.  St. Thomas schooled El Paso Cathedral and Westlake trumped Jesuit Dallas.  Kingwood fell to Lake Travis, while Stony Point scored at the death to defeat Allen.

The North Texas City of Irving, the Plano and Alliance clubs, and Tournament Chairman Nick Marketos are all to be congratulated for hosting a great event at a terrific venue.

Gordon Tietjens and Waisale Serevi.Serevi™ has announced that longtime New Zealand 7s Coach Gordon Tietjens will return to participate in the June 6-10 Serevi™ Academy alongside host and Serevi™ co-founder Waisale Serevi.

“We are absolutely thrilled to welcome Gordon back to the Academy in year two” said Serevi. “Gordon’s coaching resume – complete with 9 of 12 IRB Sevens Series Championships -- is second to none. His ability to mold up and coming young players is legendary. His intensity is contagious and his attention to detail inspiring. Academy participants are in for a treat.”

Says Tietjens, “I’m thrilled to return. I love what Wais and his team are doing to grow rugby in North America, which I believe to be a vast untapped frontier in a rugby sense. Though the sport is clearly less developed in America, the athlete pool is sensational. I am confident that through their passion and professionalism, the Serevi team will help elevate the game in advance of the 2016 Olympics and bolster the number of quality players flowing to North American national teams.”

This year’s Academy is priced at $985 per player, which covers programming, room & board on the University of San Diego (USD) campus. The Academy targets players on the cusp of national team play and focuses on core rugby skills, nutrition and mental & game preparation. Emphasis is placed on fitness, skill building, nutrition and proper recovery. Athletes do a mix of gym work and running in the early mornings and typically complete morning and afternoon field sessions, during which they are supported by a physical therapist.

Mother Lode, BOD in NorCal Nail-Biter
School Age - Girls

For the last few years, it’s been the Sacramento Amazons who were the big story out of Northern California’s girls U19 division. But this year has been about Mother Lode and Bishop O’Dowd – two teams that have been last year’s national finalist and 2010 champion twice this season.

NorCal contested its championship this weekend and saw the two teams advance to the final. Mother Lode defeated Rio Linda in their semifinal, while BOD posed a convincing 36-19 win over the Amazons. Bishop O’Dowd led Sacramento 22-0 at the half before the Amazons mounted a comeback, but it was too little, too late.

Fullback Olivia Bernadel-Huey scored a brace of tries and added three conversions to lead with 16 points.

"Olivia is nothing short of spectacular,” BOD director of rugby Ray Lehner said. “Best of all, she is only a sophomore, so we will have her services for a couple more seasons."

Scrumhalf Gretchen Shaw, flyhalf Nicole Ratto, wing Audrey Carson and prop Rachel Keener also added five-pointers. No. 8 Katelin Chan ran riot over the Amazons in every phase of play and earned Woman of the Match honors.

"The girls played hard,” BOD Director of Rugby Ray Lehner said. “Sadly we lost a couple of starting backs to injury, and with our backline already somewhat depleted, we missed them for Sunday's match, which is a pity."

BOD could have used the extra punch of their typical strong backline in the final match against Mother Lode. A nail-biting championship ensued, and BOD’s Shaw got the scoring rolling seven minutes in with a try – just as she did against the Amazons. Bernadel-Huey added the conversion for the 7-0 lead.

Mother Lode snapped into action and scored an unconverted try five minutes later, and then took the lead before the half with a converted try, 12-7 into the break. Mother Lode extended their lead 17-7 at the 52nd mark, and BOD responded with a Zoe Karanfilian try three minutes later. Bernadel-Huey’s conversion pulled the team to within three points.

The remaining 25 minutes was an intense battle, but neither side could extend or close the point differential. The final whistle sounded and Mother Lode was crowned NorCal’s champ.

"It’s a disappointing loss,” Lehner said. “We had some chances that we just failed to cash in on.  Championship matches are always marred by some nervous jitters, and we certainly had our share of mental mistakes at critical moments."

"One of our core team values is effort, that is, to play really hard and we certainly did,” Lehner added. “Gretchen Shaw, Amina Scott and Katelin Chan all played through pain and injury from the day before. It was inspiring, very selfless."

Mother Lode will represent NorCal at the California State Championship on May 19. Southern California is sending Fullerton, although the team actually lost to Fallbrook 20-15 during this weekend’s SoCal championship. Due to Fallbrook’s impending trip to nationals this weekend, the defending national champion has ceded its berth to the state championship. The state championship will take place at Jesuit High School in Sacramento this weekend.
