Liberty Downs Chuckanut for Washington Title |

Liberty beat rival Chuckanut 20-10 for the Washington State Championship Saturday. The game was as a renewal of a local derby that's raged for the last few years.
Cuckanut and Liberty went head-to-head three times during the regular season. The first match Chuckanut sidled a slim victory of just one point. The next time the two faced each other, Liberty won by 25 points. So coming into this championship, both teams knew they would be up against a similarly formidable opponent.
“We were really well prepared this year,” the Liberty coach Jeff Candler said. They sought out Chuckanut’s big guns and went for them. They played a structured game, putting a lot of pressure on Chuckanut’s star flyhalf early. He played well, but Liberty broke him by immediately targeting him. Chuckanut played an incredible defense, on the other hand, neutralizing the Liberty centers for the majority of the game. However, Candler says with persistence his boys won the battle between the halfbacks and were able to pull off the win.
The star of the game was Colby Ralph, who scored the first try of the game to get Liberty off to a good start and then played strong and consistent from there.
However, Coach Candler says what really brought on the win was the great chemistry of his team. The Liberty boys have been together since 7th grade and have toured nationally together for two years.

Nakahi Wins Idaho State Title |
|

In front of a capacity crowd in Boise, Idaho, for the second time in three years, Nakahi was crowned as the Rugby Idaho High School boys State Champions with a 28-27 win over Capital. Nakahi is a High School club team (Eagle, Middleton and Rocky Mountain HS student/athletes) where Capital is a single school team. Similar to the last two state finals, it proved to be the must-see match of the year. There is no bigger rivalry in the Gem State.
Nakahi struck first, within the first 5 minutes, off of the consistent foot of senior Blake Siebert. Nakahi followed that up with a try by rookie sophomore flyhalf Austin Hook through some great support play. The conversion was hit by Siebert. Under fierce forward play, Capital struck back to make it 7-10. Capital scored again with another try, but the conversion fell short; 12-10. Nakahi reclaimed the lead with another penalty kick off Siebert’s boot.
Nakahi took a blow at minute 45 when their standout No. 8 was red-carded, leaving them shorthanded for the remainder of the match. From that point forward, the seven-man pack, led by openside flanker Josh Crossgrove, blindside flanker Mitch Cottle, loosehead prop Logan Paul and hooker Aiden Blazina, played inspired rugby and proved effective in the tackle, pick & jam and ruck.
The forward play, coupled with the efficiency of Nakahi scrumhalf Troy Tolman, and their backline, which boasted four speedsters in Blake Boren, Mikie Bishop, Skyler Elsworth and Cody Burden, was the difference. The Nakahi backline put on a great defensive effort led by Junior center Hayden Cross, shutting down the loose forward attacks by Capital. The Nakahi Backline scored all of their tries on the day, with seniors Boren and Skylar Elsworth both crossing the goal line to cap off well-executed backline movements. Siebert converted two of the three tries on the day.
Keep an eye on Nakahi for next season. Only six of their first 22-man roster are seniors and with tours scheduled for Utah and Northern California in the spring of 2014, they are bound to raise their level of play.

Doylestown Pennsylvania State Champs |

Doylestown claimed the Pennsylvania State Championship with a 22-5 defeat of Downingtown in Harrisburg, Pa. Saturday.
Try scorers included Vince Iacobone and Chris Burian, with two conversions scored by Jeremy Ault. Putting forth a strong defense, Doyleston held Downington out of the try zone right down until the very last minutes of the match, proving that defense is often the name of the game.
“The boys played brilliant defense against a very strong opponent. We sent them backwards in the tackle every single time they touched the ball,” said Doylestown’s coach.
“I don’t believe their forwards made the gainline on any crash ball either. Every guy that stepped on the field played their heart out and came together as a true team to win.”
