Mary Washington, the Virginia Military Institute, James Madison and Longwood won in the Cardinals Conference quarterfinals over the weekend, advancing to next week’s semifinals. The finalists then square off Sunday for the Cardinals’ automatic bid to the DII Sweet 16.
Top seeded Mary Washington (UMW) cruised to a Cardinals Collegiate Rugby Conference (CCRC) quarterfinal win over eight-seed VCU by a score of 82-0 Saturday. The Mothers opened their score sheet in the first minute when wing Kurt Wall caught a misplaced VCU kick and counterattacked to score a try. Fly half Christophe Perdu made the conversion.
A game but outmanned VCU tried to battle back, but at the seven-minute mark, UMW struck again as left wing Todd Lancaster broke free from a lineout and scored a try in the corner. Conversion missed, the score stood at 12-0.
Over last 15 minutes of the first half, UMW mounted attack after attack and added four more tries as Lancaster scored his second and Ben Britten, Nick Ryan, and Tyler Hensley each got one. Perdu made two conversions and UMW had a 36-0 lead at the break.
The second half was more of the same even though UMW ran on all their substitutes. They rang up eight more tries (Pat Byrne had 2 and Adrian Martinez, Ryan Miller, Barak Holtslag, Perdu, Jordan Reece, and Luke Bressen has one each). Perdu added two more conversions and Jarad Lambourne made the last conversion that gave UMW a comprehensive 82-0 win.
Elsewhere in the conference, VMI scored 11 tries and two conversions to beat William and Mary 59-0, James Madison (JMU) outlasted Old Dominion (ODU) 51-38, and Longwood University advanced after No. 7 Richmond forfeited for unexplained reasons.
The April 13 semi-final matches will be UMW vs VMI and JMU vs Longwood with winners playing for the championship on April 14.
