The Argentina U18s smashed the touring High School All Americans 52-3 Saturday in Buenos Aires.
Joaquin Riera notched 17 points, including one try, and the Pumitas scored within four minutes and took control early.
Agustin Teruel’s opening try was followed by one from No.8 Jerome Mazzoni, and another by the loose forward. Near the end of the first half, Teruel and Thomas Ramirez both scored, which, with four Riera conversions, put Argentina ahead 33-0.
The HSAA team had a few chances in the second half, but the increased pace of the game combined with the fatigue of five games and three countries in two weeks started to tell. Errors kept the Americans out of the try zone, and Argentina scored three more thanks to captain and wing Germain Schultz, sub wing Emiliano Somsini, and Riera.
The HS All Americans got a penalty from flyhalf Ben Cima.
"I think we did a good job,” said Argentina lock Pedro Ortega (comments translated from Spanish). “There’s room for improvement, but basically what the coaches asked us we did pretty well. Of course I need to work harder, but we are on track.
"I did not think the point spread would be so wide. It was known that the U.S. would be a tough team and it would not be simple for us to win this match. Fortunately, the result and said everything was in our favor. "
The All Americans fielded a team that was entirely under 18, except for sub back Greg Wood. This game was a harsh lesson for the Americans, but a good one at the end of a wildly successful tour, which saw the HS All Americans beat Chile twice, and split two close games with Uruguay, for a 3-2 record.
