in my opinion the usa 7's program needs to revaluate everything that goes into selecting a team. If you notice every other successful sevens team in the world plays with the same group of players throughout the entire series. rather then having multiple camps and selecting new players to travel for every tournament. you cant expect guys to train and play with new teamates every tournament and be successful. If they would pick a pool in the beginning of the season and pick a set team and then go from the player pool for inury purposes maybe the U.S will actually win a tournament or two. Which brings me to my next point on bringing in crossover players from football. there are enough great rugby players in this that can play at the international level and we shouldnt have ot bring in any crossover players. Its a lot easier to get someone in shape who already knows the game of rugby then to teach someone who is in shape how to play international level rugby.

USA needs a new 7’s coach, plus start using the guys who know the game. It’s not all about how big or tall you are and/or if you an amazing athlete from American football, etc. It’s all about players who know rugby, have great fitness and speed, plus the ability to read the game. Reading the game is not just what’s in front of you, it’s the skill on knowing how to run and when to run. Link this with a player who knows how to pass; offload and supports, then you have a making of a good 7’s player. USA has a ton of players who fit this profile. We just don’t have the right coach or selection committee to give them the chance.

7sFan, I'm not going to bash Serevi or his accomplishments - just not a good fit as a coach of the Eagles. If he truly was fired from other jobs because "he was not given what was promised", I would say that he wouldn't last long as an employee of USA Rugby! If you think about it, it's a testament to Caravelli's ability that the Eagles occasionally make the QF's and even made a final, given their amateur status vs. pros. That's a significant accomplishment. I know we want and demand better, but until we're on equal footing with the other core teams, we won't consistently compete.

Serevi can be consultant and coach Caravelli stays. But coach has to start giving clear strategies to the team to follow for particular opponents. Adopt other countries' strategies used successfully against this team and that team. Adapt SAfrica's tactics in final against Fiji. What's wrong with that. The team can train to perform any strategy and they have to learn to mix tactics. Again coach must do this. I still say the US London team is very experienced (compared to say France) and balanced but they are not firing on all cylinders all the time playing to their potential.

Gets your facts right the only time Fiji 7s won the IRB seris was when Serevi was at the head. The coaching jobs he was not given what was promised PNG qualified for the Common wealth games. If you ask me Caraveli not making it happen.

I agree 100% with Basic. Serevei was a great player he has coached 4 countries including Fiji, all failed. Have him consultant with Caravelli. What we need to do is fund our team to take the pro. Until that happens they will hang in the 10 to 12 spot.

The level of competition is rising, as well as the resources being put behind the programs. Before you call for the coach's head, let's see what he can do with 12 contracted players, a fairly consistent squad and a consistent training environment, like the rest of the core teams. They can't even get funding to play any warm-up tournaments! That's two strikes against them before they even step on the field. If you want to see increased performance, call for increased funding. These are the issues that face an amateur squad trying to compete with professionals. And for all you calling for Serevi to be the magic bullet - he's been bounced out of every coaching job he's had. Great player - probably the best ever - but apparently not a great coach.

Caravelli should stay as he is the best US 7's coach by far, Serevi could be helpful as a assistant coach but to run a program in the US you have to do all of the off the field stuff too and being the head coach is way harder than being a specialist coach. When Severi ran Fiji he had a big support staff and legend status in his country. The simple fact that we can compete with the support that we get(usa rugby)on this world stage year after year shows we are boxing above our weight. I am open to any input on other countries with like size supported programs that are out performing us?

Until Sevens (and Fifteens) put some professional teams on the field on a regular basis, everyone is fooling themselves in thinking that anything but an occasional consolation bracket win is possible. A bit like golf...the professional will beat the amateur 30 days out of 31 every month.

Caravelli should stay as our coach. Just heard an interview form him yesterday. They played poorly this weekend. But with that he says they should not lose to non-core teams. He fronts up takes the blame. I'm in London and will cheer the Eagles on next weekend. Yesterday it was not coaching the players made mistakes they usually don;'t. Next week is even tougher. They could go 0-3, Fiji, Samoa and the host country. By far they have had the toughest pools in every tournament this year. 7 of 8 tournaments they have played 2 top 5 teams in their pool and the host country. Caravelli should stay he is the right man.
