Simply put, it's interesting to note the complete lack of comments painting Cal as beating the 'better team' ("What's this?" you say). No one has stated that BYU lost to a 'lesser team' (Am I allowed to say that of Cal?) because they were actually beat by themselves ... Scoff though you may, take a look at the numbers on the season. Investigate the skill level of the players and their stats. Watch the final match again, and focus on Cal's goof-ups and spills. Remember, many of BYU's errors were caused by BYU ... not Cal. One final thought. Perhaps Cal's greatest weapon is something not even their own: the perceptions of others. As long as everyone says, "Cal is the best," then they're the best. If every opponent thinks, "Cal's defense is impenetrable," then so it is. I could go on, but then I would be drinking the same Kool-aid(Cal-aid?). Instead, here's a new flavor: "BYU is the best." Mmmm, tastes sweeter!

Well, let's say BYU and Cal meet again in the final for the next four years (which, given the current state of college rugby, is entirely plausible) ... Does Cal dominate every time? Does BYU come close and lose all four, or perhaps win one or two out of four?? Or does BYU even begin to surpass Cal and win three or four out of the four??? Who can say yay or nay to these questions? The latter of these statements may seem particularly laughable to some, yet such a response only illustrates my point: belief can override reality, i.e., I propose that BYU is much more Cal's equal in actuality despite the fact that prevailing thought and commentary defaults to Cal as far and away the better.

Lots of talk about BYU's mistakes as well. Actually, Cal had mistakes with knock-ons and botched line-outs also (even some garbage kicking if my memory serves me) ... would be interesting to see the actual numbers. But I think it important to note that had a certain BYU error or two not occurred, then the talk of BYU's errors outweighing those of Cal would go out the window. It would have been a tie game in the closing minutes ... which becomes a lot more like BYU's eventual win in 2009 (25-22) than their comparable loss in 2010 (19-7). Either way, folks, we're talking some really close games here ... and though BYU has now met Cal in the final match for 6 straight years with more close matches than not, it's easy for the good ol' boys to cling to the idea that Cal is still vastly better than BYU.

I'm just going to disregard all prior comments as too many of them amount to pure rubbish. The Cal-BYU game was very gritty and intense. 20 mins gone on the clock and all zeros. Personally, I'm surprised by all the comments that essentially revert back to the same, old stereotypes of BYU and Cal from previous years ... For example, watching Danny Barrett and Blaine Sculley and Seamus Kelly run through Utah like butter not more than a week before this match, I thought BYU was in for a real drubbing ... not just in terms of points, but literally a physical owning! BYU always brings the physicality, but they looked sluggish and too individualistic against ASU whereas Cal looked like they were taking a stroll in the park. I'm proud of BYU for stepping it up to change like that in a week's time. They brought it to Cal the entire 80 mins. I'd bet the unknowing observer would say the teams were physically even ... and that is a feat against Cal.

Flanker 7 doesn't have his facts straight. The IRB has no age restriction on University or College participation. The official teams from Trinity, Cambridge or Oxford often include senior internationals (capped All Blacks or Springboks, etc.) that are attending University in the U.K. for graduate work. They can play for as long as they wish and are actually students, and their age is seen by all as irrelevant. It's only here in the U.S. that we have a fixation on age and limit the participation of students to 4 or 5 years, depending on the sport.

I am not trying to be a racist in any way. I wasn't trying to single out any particular group. I love how everyone of you that argued with my point forgot to mention the fact that if our collegiate all americans have to be U-23. It then only makes sense to have that be the same age limit for the rest of college. If that is what the rest of the world is doing then we should probably jump on board! With how rugby is now in the US we should probably do what everyone in the IRB is. -I am not trying to single out soldiers especially! that is why with how today's world works especially the US if you are over 23 you play for a mens team. its not very hard. and its not singling anyone out. and it is fair for everyone.

Slow down hippy man, you sure exhibit a lot of hostility about a sport that you seem to dislike so much. Why are you even reading about a sport of which you have little respect or knowledge about? And what is with all the name calling? It is one thing to be passionate about a belief, but being verbally abusive is the mark of a person crying out for attention. You should go take a cold shower and get back on those “meds”.

"The Truth" What telecast? This happen in a vacuum and the majority of the people in the stand were there because of the high school games. The market for collegiate rugby is not even on the radar for sponsors. USA Rugby had to foot the bill to produce this game and that it is why it is on tape delay...Rugby paid to be on air....sort of like a paying a prostitute, which lacrosse never does to get on ESPN! Rugby is such a joke! You apparntly didn't go to the game. The west side of the bleachers were not even filled for the U19 Game. (the biggest of all the high school games) the whole stadium was filled for the CPD game. Go cradle your balls in your dinky little Lacrosse shaft and comment when you actually play a REAL sport you ignorant piece of trash!!!!
