Simon: as I have posted previously, BYU currently has 3 Maori players and a Maori coach. They have been performing the haka for many, many years. Coach Tarawhiti has taught haka to students at the Polynesian Cultural Center for years and takes this ceremony very seriously. And, so you'll know, the BYU haka is indeed original, written by Coach Tarawhiti's brother incorporating the text of a saga from the Book of Mormon about 2000 youth who fought courageously in spite of overwhelming odds, and were able to overcome due to their great their great faith an that of their mothers. You are free to resent the use of the haka by USA-based players, but culture travels throughout the world and is incorporated by others who admire and emulate what they see. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. It's like resenting white folks performing jazz riffs created by Fats Waller--they should only be done by blacks in New Orleans an no where else. Silly.

Umm, as a NZer I`d like to ask why the hell BYU are doing the haka? What cultural significance does the haka have to BYU? It is strictly a part of NZ`s culture and the last time I looked BYU was in the USA! The only time it should be used outside of NZ should be by a touring side fro NZ or an expat team ala the NZ Embassy Ambasador`s XV which is a represenatative team largely made of Kiwis in the US. If anyone is going to be suing anyone, it might well be the Ngati Toa tribe whose rangatira (Chief) made up the Kamate haka anf the NZRFU. Even the NZRFU had to sign a contarct earlier this year with Ngati Toa for continued use as the tribe has intellectual property rights. I`m sure they would be very interested to hear some college in the USA is using THEIR haka I expect without their consent. By all means BYU can have a pregame challenge if they want to but they should make up their own original one.

The match wasn't broadcast on BYUTV because the sports crew was doing baseball instead. Since baseball is part of the athletic department, they have priority when it comes to broadcast resources. It's the same with volleyball or women's soccer. They get priority over any extramural sport like rugby. BYUTV does rugby because a)they like doing it because it's a great game and very photogenic and b)they have an open date with nothing of a higher priority on the schedule. If the pregame haka were to be banned by the IRB, then BYU would do it for their fans after the game as they have done informally for many years. If it's OK for the All Blacks, then it's OK for anyone. You can't have it both ways. So long as its a genuine cultural celebration and doesn't cause fist fights, then I don't see how you can ban it, no more than banning the U.S. national anthem in deference to the sensibilities of the foreign nationals in attendance.

I'm sure BYU mean well with their Haka but it has no place in rugby - both the IRB and USAR should ban all pre-match rituals. Gary Lane made a huge mistake turning his back, if he didn't want to face it, he should have taken his kids off the field altogether.

What is everyone talking about? Sue what? Who? This whole thing is ridiculous. In hindsight, ASU may have not chosen to turn their backs because apparently it was not interpreted as the boys meant it. Thats it though. No one is suing, thankfully no fights broke out before the game when BYU was right next to ASU, so everyone can move on. Right? Or are we gonna get some lame Gary Lane comments? This board gets a little full of itself sometimes with its vitriol, but lets stay honest people. Congrats to BYU on the Navy win, keep it up.
