Uniformity? The only thing that is going to cause uniformity in American rugby is money. When college/club teams start getting massive payouts for winning or even competeing in the National 7s championship, D1A, Varsity Cup, club d1, Elite Cup etc. Then you will see Army switch to a Fall 7s/ Spring 15s season and BYU start play in the college 7s national championship. Until then it is going to be very disjonted.

It's not complaining about what you don't have. It's about equating teams with different resources. Army has a 14 million dollar facility on campus, which is the greatest thing ever. I'm jealous. Most college clubs have a budget of around 25k and play on a hand me down field. Cal's yearly expenses for their full-time coaching staff,is somewhere around 150k, if not more. There is a vast difference between the haves and the have nots. Regulate the play based on the differences. The real reason that the elite won't get together and form a league is because some teams would have LOSING records.

Mr. Kane, Judging by the Life & Davenport schedules (http://liferunningeagles.com/schedule.aspx?path=mrugby& & http://www.dupanthers.com/schedule.aspx?path=mrugby&schedule=352&), they are not complaining. Davenport plays Michigan (Big10) & plays Kutztown (a "like-situated team" by your definition). Life plays SEC, Big10, & ACC schools and others. Are you creating a false narrative to support your argument? If so, it falls short. The other Pat is right, "Don’t complain about what you don’t have. Rather, work your own advantages and make big decisions for the greater good."

Pat-why would Wheeling Jesuit create a varsity rugby program without a solid plan in place for where they were going to compete? Seems like administrative incompetence. And i agree that the actuality of that particular situation with the Keystone Conference was the result of politics, jealousy, etc., so if that is all that portion of this article was referring to, then ok.

Whoa ! I didn't know teams were turning down varsity status . Pat, what schools have decided not to except varsity status ? Or are you saying that teams without the benefit of the "varsity package" don't want to compete with teams that have greater resources ?

Yep Devendorf, the Keystone Conference has such great following at each of its schools that it couldn't risk letting in Wheeling Jesuit. Same with the MAC Schools, which has multiple non-MAC teams in it. The reality is some schools are acting in jealousy and avoiding varsity programs, which is small-minded and silly.

Happy New Years, there is a lot here and I don't have my boots, so I'll just stick a toe in. The largest group in rugby and the cash cow, are the colleges. They are not going to change unless adults from USARugby get out to administrators and express their beliefs about what should be done at the college level. The problems in the US are systematic , inter-connected, and flow down hill.

I am so sick of the ignorance behind the argument you put forward under "foster high performance." Telling a conference full of schools that it should let any team in regardless of school brand and/or academic requirements and then in the same breath telling these schools that they should use their own advantages to build their programs shows a fundamental lack of understanding of what the advantages that these schools have actually are. The precise advantage that big, NCAA D1 schools have that they can use to build their program is the fact that they are NOt these schools like Life and Davenport and have existing fan bases of alumni who will support them when they play in recognizable conferences against recognizable opponents. It is time for the varsity programs to stop complaining that the Big Ten or SEC won't let them in to play against the club teams in these conferences and instead create their own plan to foster their high performance varsity programs with like-situated teams.
