Does anyone know if coach-nominated players just show up at the regional camps this winter, or if they need to be "invited"? Very little information about how this works, especially being that the deadline for nominations is a month AFTER the Men's camps.

regional yes, national all star championships no. It will be interesting to see how many regional all star championships remain after GU realignment. Most unions foot the bill for those things because those tourneys are buildups to the National All Star Championships. With the LAU, TUs, and dues model very different next year, we shall see .... I hope we can keep these regional tournaments.

Aviva: at the U20 level, there are lots of regional all-star tournaments around the country (Denver, Charlotte, DC, Washington state, Met NY, etc.). All of the tournaments I've mentioned are attended by national team selectors. I know that several of these either already have a women's division or are designing one for this year.

It boils down to money, as usual. The more viable sports in this country have the budgets to scout nationwide, it is important enough to find the best players that the financial responsibility is on the organization to make sure that they dot every i. In rugby, there is not enough money to scout effectively nationwide, so the financial responsibility falls on the player. Until this is remedied, we have to understand that some of the best players may not get noticed and get in to the system

This is the same thing they are doing with the WNT. Instead of being evaluated in a playing environment, its in a camp environment. How to you get accepted to a camp? Recommendations , test scores, etc. There is a place for camp and competition assessments. Taking actually competition rugby out of the mix is IMHO a bad idea.

Perhaps I misunderstood. I hope that is the case, and that this is not the sole opportunity. That would be a good thing. I can remember these camps back in the day, and our team would play the "All American Team" whose players had the money to travel to these, and ours did not, and we beat them by 30 points!

That's not my understanding. It seems that this is exactly the opposite. By staging these camps, the coaches are creating an ADDITIONAL pathway onto the national team. Players can and will still be identified at the traditional venues of regional and all-star championships. This simply allows an additional arena for kids who may not be lucky enough to be on a playoff team, or whose region may not enter a team into a post-season all-star event. If you look at the previous article announcing Coach Kelly's appointment, it mentioned that he is already scheduled to take a recruiting trip to Hawaii to scout for talent. I take these new camps as evidence that the staff is working hard to overturn more stones, not less.

Terrible idea. So, players who do not have the financial resources to travel to these camp have no chance at being considered. What a shame.
