Wrong rugbydoug. Varsity Cup was the brainchild of BYU. Cal will still play in USA Rugby playoffs if they qualify. This Varsity Cup competition won't last for two specific reasons. #1 They won't get TV rights unless they can prove they can draw large spectator crowds which they won't. Second, 15s is quickly becoming the stepchild to 7s which I hate to see but 7s is perfect for TV 15s not so much at least not in the US. I give Varsity Cup two years before Cal and others see there is not enough money to justify the expense.

The Varsity Cup is cute but will only be seen as an attempt to profit on the college game. If this was truly a move made in the best interest of the sport, where are the other competitors with the talent and backing? I see Cal, BYU and Utah then decent teams to fill out the 8 team bracket. Arkansas State, Life, Davenport and in time Lindenwood (and many others) will give these guys a serious run but now these teams will not be able to play up to the deserved competition. It is sad that there is even a fight over the money in this relatively small sport. If all college teams worked together under the same umbrella that serves the national teams then we can one day be strong enough to handle multiple competitive formats. You guys are fighting over scraps now instead of working together and make real money if there was a long-term plan. Shame!

So this is the show case of the best talent in America? If it was we would see some non brand name schools in that mix. Wait....That will never happen because the "Rugby Demi Gods" feel only brand name schools produce the best talent.
