Also, Lindenwood is transitioning to NCAA Division II, and none of the schools being mentioned (Davenport et al) are online for-profit schools like the University of Phoenix is. Who cares if these teams aren't "name" schools? Remind me again about: Akron (soccer), Butler (basketball), Cal State Fullerton (baseball), Edinboro (wrestling), Johns Hopkins (lacrosse), Long Beach State (m/w volleyball), Minnesota-Duluth (hockey), Pacific (w volleyball), UC Irvine (m volleyball), Virginia Commonwealth (basketball), etc.?

Not all together sure why this is becoming so contentious. It is about the players. Just like coaches should care about their players and administrators should care about their students we all need to recognize that Varsity or Club, these teams have talented athletes, solid coaches and hopefully a drive to grow and improve their teams. This is just another step in the right direction, no matter how small. It is great to see all the passion in the posts as long as we all want the best for the players and to see that improvement in the National game that we want. And on the field....winner to come from Life, Cal, Dartmouth or Davenport.

BFoley, Your inability to read comprehensively is alarming. I never said they are not moving the sport forward, I said that "moving the sport forward" was not the impetus for these schools creating a varsity rugby program. I have alot of respect for the rugby program at Davenport and everyone involved in it. I know some of them well. In fact, the descriptor I used for Davenport as a "brick and mortar University of Phoenix" actually was used by someone intimately involved with the program to describe the University to me.

Devendorf... Your ignorance is alarming. I can not speak on behalf of Lindenwood because I know little about their history but I can speak on behalf of Davenport. Davenport University was founded in 1866 and is far from a brick and mortar U of Phoenix. Davenport is known for producing some of the finest students in West Michigan (one of the only bright spots in the state economically), many of which are highly successful in their fields. And they founded their rugby team because several people approached the school to start a club team and as they looked into it, they recognized that they could fill a niche in the "market" and capitalize on the untapped talent pool in the Midwest and do what had not been previously done at the undergrad level. For you to say that giving players a professional atmosphere to develop their game in is not helping the sport that you must be off your rocker. Hats off to Coach Van Biljon and the past and current coaches on the awesome job they have done.

McFadden, You do realize, I hope, that Davenport and Lindenwood have very little interest in "moving rugby forward," right? 5 years ago, neither of these schools had rugby programs. They created them specifically as a source of income for schools that otherwise were struggling to enroll students. It's not as if they had rugby clubs that existed since 1970 and suddenly made the decision to elevate their status to varsity so as to "move the sport forward." As soon as these programs are no longer making money, they'll be eliminated and the schools will move onto the next gimmick to get kids to come to what are nothing more than brick and mortar Universities of Phoenix. Again, nobody is debating the quality of these rugby programs. But your repeated statements that other schools just need to get their institutions to do what Davenport and Lindenwood (and Life and Ark. St.) did, ignores the reality of the situations at these schools. But don't let reality get in your way.
