I don't think the lineup is too bad. There is an extra west coast team as well as the local teams and quite a few of the teams for the CRC did also double up and do well at the nationals (Delaware being a notable example). At least for the first time some teams got in through actually qualifying like Wisconsin and V Tech. I think Texas, Notre Dame & Florida need to be given the elbow. They don't even seem to be progressing after 2-3 years in the CRC. Replace them with any three of Arkansas St, Texas A&M, San Diego St, St. Mary's and say CWU and you'd have an even better lineup. At least it's likely one of those above teams will win the LVI and get in anyway. I wish USA7s would leave another couple of spots free for the LVI as well.

Trust me, we are waiting.... You are absolutely right, USA 7's should look to have a plethora of regional youth clubs at this event and a discounted rate.

This is the best comment in this thread. If USA 7s wants to put butts in seats, Dan Lyle should pay attention to this comment. Discounting tickets to youth teams from the East Coast and directly marketing to them (i.e., contacting their coaches and parental representatives about this opportunity) should be an annual staple of this event (it may already be happening, but we've heard/read nothing about it).

The bottom line is that quality West Coast teams have not been able to sell tickets. I've been to the Philly tournament for the past two years and the stadium was half-empty with little growth year-on-year. NBC is not happy abouth this, they don't want to show empty seats on TV. Even Cal had no more than 50 dedicated supporters that I saw. The service academies draw well in football, but at the CRC the academies had no more than 100 supporters. The biggest crowds last year were from Life , Temple and Delaware. So all the complainers should buy tickets and travel to Philly and help fill the stadium. When the organizers start feeling confident about selling out the stadium, they will be able to invite quality teams from the west coast instead of local fillers.

True but the real question is: are the best even in college yet let alone HS? Grassroots rugby over the next 7 - 10 years will produce the best rugby talent. I see the CRC as a vehicle to raise awareness of and build interest in rugby. For our youth players, convincing parents that rugby is a viable and safe sport is paramount and the CRC can provide that on a large scale.

TV is good for Rugby, yes. But in order to truly move forward, and insure that the Eagles select the best talent to be competitive, they need to see the best playing the best. Having a CRC that excludes 7 of the current top 10 and 15 of the Top 25 is not showcasing or testing the best in the sport. The Nationals fortunately provide more depth, with 9 of the Top 10 and 17 of the Top 25. There will be at least 52 people there, because we are in!

Being a youth coach, this is awesome for the rugby brand in America. Yes, some of the best programs have been excluded but for good reason. Temple, UPenn, St. Joes and Kutztown will put butts in the seats, plain and simple. NBC and USA Sevens needs to turn a profit and experience high viewership. I'm planning on taking my youth club and their families to this event. Rugby in the USA needs this. If not, we'll still be sub-par in the next 10 years regardless of the Olympics.

Got to give USA Sevens credit. This is the best group of teams they have invited in the tournament's history. It's an outstanding tournament with unsurpassed media coverage and they have done a superlative job of creating and marketing the event. It's good for college rugby and American rugby. I hope they keep working to ensure the best teams are invited and also give more teams the opportunity to play. It's a great experience for the teams and the fans!

CRC is a privately run, for profit, invitational tournament. Gripe all you want about USA Rugby not promoting the real championship as effectively, but complaining about the CRC field is a waste of breath. They invite who they want to invite, just like the BCS. It's entertaining, sponsors pay for it, NBC airs it. You want rugby to be run like a business? Well this is what it looks like...
