You must not have seen where I say "this is oversimplified, but not by much." And you clearly missed the point of the post, which is that USAR is spending far beyond its resources. The CEO is just one example. The MNT is another example. Business 101-if you operate a non-profit that brings in $6million in revenue, you can't spend as if you bring in $13million in revenue. Again, this is a Board of Directors issue. Which in turn is a Congress issue, which in turns means nothing is ever going to change unless there is avid revolt by dues-paying members.

So your solution is to cut the CEOs salary by $100k and all of USA rugbys problems will be solved? Putting a couple extra games on TV would be nice, but wouldn't come close to having the impact on the game we'd all like it to have. We have to be honest with ourselves and come to the realization it's going to take a lot more than a few hundred thousand dollars to get the game where we'd like it to be.

Quick reasearch on Guidestar shows the following for 2010 (obviously slightly outdated): USA Volleyball Revenue: $13,100,000 CEO Compensation: $258,000 USA Rugby Revenue: $6,100,000 CEO compensation: $241,000 So an NGB with twice the revenue pays its CEO roughly the same as USA Rugby pays its CEO with half the revenue. Nobody is saying pay the CEO $30,000. But if you had a CEO that made something more like $150,000, you would free up enough money to pay the production costs to put a couple of prime events on TV. In turn, you get more sponsors because you can offer them commercial spots. this is oversimplified, but not by much. And this is not intended to be a knock on Melville, he very well may be worth every penny he is being paid. But USA Rugby simply cannot afford him at this salary, and that is an issue for the BOD.

Look, if you're a student-athlete playing rugby at Virginia Tech, you've just played in the ACRL 7s Championship that took place in a stadium with luxury boxes, was professionally webcast, etc. The event certainly could be improved upon, but it was likely a better experience for the participants than the USA Rugby 7s championship in Texas A&M played on intramural fields will be. So if you're choosing between that and the CRC, what is a 20 year old kid going to choose? The one that gets him on TV, is a great experience, and gets him some recognition on campus? Or the one that is a step backwards from the conference tournament you just played in? It's a no-brainer. Sure there is something to be said for wanting to compete against the best, but will the best be there? Will Dartmouth come? We know BYU is not coming. Will Cal come? Utah? All remains to be seen. But I don't think you can fault VT's student-athletes for choosing the event that will be a better experience.

I love how people just assume money grows on trees. If there's a qualified CEO out there who wouldn't demand a CEO type salary then I'm all for it, but the reality is this is a lot bigger than how much the CEO of USA rugby gets paid. The CEO's salary wouldn't even begin to pay for all the events, tournaments, camps, travel, etc. that we as fans and participants would like to be subsidized. If you look at it in a vacuum, sure maybe a CEO with a $30k a year salary would ensure all qualified teams would be able to participate in the national tournament. But again this is much bigger than one issue with one tournament. As rugby fans who want to move the game forward in America we need to think bigger and stop playing the blame game. This blame game only hinders our ability to do so.

I get the CRC is not a national championship, but with it's profile and promotion it's presented as one basically. If teams are opting for that instead of the true national championship that should tell you a lot about how things rank.

The CRC's is not a national championship. It is a national invitational. USA rugby has to do something about this, because at the moment neither team (CRC or National 7's) is really the champion.
