You're missing the most important point. Cal, BYU, Utah, and Navy are not second tier teams. They don't belong in the D1-AA ranking regardless of the purpose of the ranking. The teams that legitimately are competing in D1-AA should not be compared to four of the strongest teams in college rugby. They are only playing against D1-AA teams until the Varsity Cup competition starts. They could just as easily play against Division II teams but that doesn't mean they should be ranked with DII teams. There needs to be a Varsity Cup ranking. That's where these teams chose to compete this year.

@mcfadden, you need to get your facts straight. This list isn't for rankings for D1-AA Championship rankings. If it was all the conference champs would be up there and they aren't. Secondly, Varsity Cup teams aren't currently allowed to play for the championship for a couple of reasons. #1 because the VC playoffs occur at the same time the D1-AA playoffs happen. Secondly, some of them are in conferences that don't have 7 viable teams and therefore are not eligible. ONCE AGAIN, this Top 25 ISN'T a ranking for playoffs.

Look, I know you guys are all disappointed that your teams would choose to bow out of national competition in favor of a 7 team tournament. Who wouldn't be? But it is what it is. The Varsity Cup teams are irrelevant in the National Championship picture for 2013 and don't deserve to be listed in the D1-AA rankings. You can criticize me all you want. You should be criticizing the people who decided to withdraw your team from D1-A.

Oh, sorry McFadden. I didn't realize that the RugbyMag rankings are used like the BCS rankings to determine who plays for the national championship. I thought it was a media poll like the AP poll. My bad.

I wouldn't put it past them to want to play for the D1-AA title. It would be just as meaningful if they purchased a big trophy with an eagle on top and put it in their trophy case. Cal may be playing D1-AA teams but does anyone think they are a AA team? BYU is a AA team? How about Utah or Navy... AA? Obviously, those teams made a big mistake but now they have to live with it. You'd think they would want a Varsity Cup ranking so the multitudes of sponsors and TV networks who are eagerly anticipating the start of the Varsity Cup season could see what's going on.

McFadden, you need to get a source of information other than rugby mag. Cal has stated that they want to be considered for an at-large invite to the D1-AA postseason. And rankings are for more than postseason clarification. That's why Ohio State is ranked in football, even though they are only playing 'socially' in college football this year.

They are "in fact" just playing socially in D1-AA and are irrelevant to the D1-AA championship picture which is what a ranking is intended to clarify. A Varsity Cup ranking would be much more meaningful.
