I can personally attest to the fact that there is no boycott of the Dennis Storer Classic by ASU. Its early semester scheduling, costs, and proximity to other games all contribute to a decision not to attend. We attended regularly for years before the recent absences. As for UCLA, any ill feelings stem from UCLA's actions. In spite of ASU always hosting away teams and going to great expense to take care of teams, UCLA threw 5 pizzas on our sideline at the end of the game and walked away. It may have been a mis-communication, but it left a sour taste for sure. I don't know where you get the idea that Gary is not trying to grow the sport. He has dedicated most of the free time of the last decade to growing the sport, and the results can be seen first-hand should you stop by ASU for a game. I understand the resentment in certain situations (I have my list of hated socal coaches as well), but this rugby in-fighting is what really destroys the growth of this sport.

ASU and their Head Coach have aggravated a number of the local teams in So Cal and it goes beyond the lawsuit threats because they were relegated to D2. One example is when shortly after ASU lost to UCLA in a very tight D2/D1 promotion/relegation match in 2009, that Gary implied involved foul play by the ref, ASU began to boycott the PAC Ten tourney. Gary Lane seems to have some kind of beef with UCLA coach Scott Stewart, which is why they don't go to the tourney stating it is cost prohibitive. This type of personal stuff is not very productive to growing the college game, and the only people who suffer are the players.

No one cares if people outside of ASU's program dont like Gary lane. A lot of the hate stems from his years of doing podcasts with Brian Lowe. Hate him if you want, say you don't like him, fine. That happens. Just don't go around disparaging his character when he has done nothing to warrant it.

Jab- you're argument based on should of won just ain't gonna fly. You lost both games, sorry. Socalrugger- this crap again? First I take great offense at ur disparaging of a man I hold in high esteem and you should be ashamed of yourself. Hate his actions, but you cannot argue his character or coaching acumen. Battle lines were drawn in that ordeal, so I understand ur resentment, however ur hatred now comes across as bitter and jealous of the success of asu's program. If you want to continue to rehash events from 3 years ago, fine. Asu got screwed and we fought to keep it from happening, now we earned our way back up and are kicking butt. Ill take that, gary lane, asu's program, and the fine men that pass through it any day over ur incessant whining that we dared not to let socal screw us. No lawsuits were filed, asu went to d2, now asu s a top 10 program. Deal with it.

Hard to respect Arizona State as long as they have Gary Lane as a head coach. Him and their program threatening lawsuits of the union when they were relegated to D2 still makes some people very angry. Low class and weasel move by a guy that seems to fit the suit.

Arizona State has the most impressive story? I disagree and would say their opposition, Air Force, has the most impressive story this year. Still growing with a new coaching staff, Air Force does not recruit and most of their ruggers first started playing their Freshman/Sophomore year. Also, they are only allotted 90 minutes to practice a day and have to lift/run on their own time while keeping up with the academics of an ivy-league education and a military lifestyle. Contrast to Navy and Army, their funding is very weak and have very poor equipment and they are still no doubt a top contender in the CPD. Face it, they should have beat Utah and ASU, two schools with more funding, better facilities, and more time. Next year, CDP followers will be taken aback at Air Force’s talent and skill and I can safely say they will be going to the playoffs, if not the Final Four, next spring.

ASU has really flourished in CPD. They are showing that not only do they belong to be here, but they can kill it in this division. They are also attracting a huge fan base, and playing in front of some impressive crowds
