re richardlgunn: You clearly have no idea what you are talking about. What you are trying to compare simply does not make sense. Yes, you are correct that the MAC tournament is not the CRC calliber (which isn't very high either being an invitational). The teams that qualify for the National 7s would be equivalent to the teams in the CRC. Seeing as how Notre Dame did not qualify for the National 7s in this tournament would explain their record in the CRC. You can not compare a qualification tournament to a tournament which has top level teams there. Davenport and BG could easily compete with any of you self-proclaimed "top tier teams," which they have for the past several years. The Midwest is easily among the top regions for Men's 7s, and it will only be a matter of time before it translates to colleges. You can already see it with several programs achieving varsity status.

Teams like Davenport can compete with the big guys. They went 1-1 with Utah in Vegas last year with almost the same team as this year. And they lost on a last second try. Facts speak louder than opinions. The Midwest has become a hotbed for Mens 7s rugby and I would expect to see the same in the college game.

I'd love to see any of those teams in the CRC. The CRC is a strong tournament yet still leaves out a few of the top programs. Notre Dame finished 3rd in this MAC schools tournament. Notre Dame couldn't even win a single match in pool play in the CRC. I'm all for development, but not fair that Davenport qualifies for Nationals through this tournament, when Utah, Cal, and Arizona all play each other in the pac12 tourney to try and qualify for Nationals. None of these schools in the MAC tourney would even be competent against the likes of Cal, Utah, Life, Dartmouth, etc. Their football brand means nothing. Their rugby brand means everything. It doesn't matter if the quality of rugby at the tournament was high, because it's all relative to the competition. And the competition is weak.

richardlgunn - Half of those teams will beat all the Big 10 Universities...It was good rugby all round. WJU look like they willl be a force coming next year. BGSU vs DU was a good final. Congrats to BGSU for putting up a good tournament!!!!

re: richarlgunn: Why aren't they decent? Because you never heard of them? Never saw them play? Haven't got enough football brand for your liking? Their rugby pedigree doesn't pass your sniff test? Satchel Paige once said- "Don't look back. Something might be gaining on you." I don't know what your rugby attachment is, but I'd disregard Satchel's advice because those clubs ARE gaining on you.

You obviously were not there yesterday. The quality of rugby was quite good and the only difference in the top teams was fitness and experience. All teams showed a good understanding of the game of 7s. Also, this was a very well run and refereed event. The games were played in the BG Football Stadium (which makes it the 2nd team since the spring to showcase 7s in their Football Stadiums in the Midwest)

The fact that Davenport gets to qualify for the Nationals from winning this tournament is seriously questionable. Not a single one of these teams are even decent.
